Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken an important and welcome decision for mobile users across the country, making calls to 0800 toll-free numbers completely free, after which users will be able to contact any helpline or service number free of charge.
According to PTA officials, earlier, mobile phone users had to pay charges to call toll-free numbers, which was often the subject of complaints from users. On the other hand, this facility was already available for free for fixed-line users.
The authority says that keeping in mind the safety and convenience of users, a formal notice of this matter was taken and a consultation process was initiated with various telecom companies. In this regard, detailed discussions were held with PTCL, NTC and all cellular operators to find a mutually acceptable solution.
According to officials, it was decided with the consensus of all stakeholders that 0800 numbers should be made truly “toll-free” and no fee should be charged from mobile users.
Experts say that this move will make it easier for citizens to contact banking, government institutions, emergency services and customer care helplines. This facility will prove to be very useful especially for low-income users.
According to telecom analysts, the decision will improve digital accessibility and public services while citizens will be able to freely submit information and lodge complaints.
The PTA has clarified that customers will no longer have to pay any additional charges for calling 0800 numbers and this facility is effective immediately.
