Lahore: In the fourth match of the Champions Trophy, Australia beat England by an amazing 5 wickets at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium. The game was very close. The Kangaroos beat their tough goal of 352 with 12 balls to spare, thanks to a great effort by Josh Inglis, who got his first international hundred.
When England batted first, they made a very good score of 351/8 in the 50 overs they were given. Ben Duckett was the star of the show, hitting a brilliant 165, and Joe Root made a steady 68. Australia’s bowlers, led by Ben Darwish (3 wickets) and Adam Zampa (2 wickets), had a hard time keeping the English hitters in check, even though they got off to a good start.
The Australian chase got off to a rough start when opener Travis Head (6) and leader Steve Smith (5) were out early. But an important 95-run stand between Matthew Short (63) and Marnus Labuschagne (47) kept the innings stable. When Josh Inglis and Alex Carey put together a 146-run stand for the fifth wicket, the game swung in Australia’s favor. Carey left the game after making a good 69, but Inglis kept his lead by hitting an amazing 120 off of just 86 balls, which included 8 fours and 6 sixes. With a quick 32 off 15 balls, Glenn Maxwell put the finishing touches on the game and made sure Australia crossed the line in style.
Josh Inglis earned the title of Player of the Match for his century, which won the game and was a turning point in his career. England’s bowlers, like Mark Wood and Adil Rashid, only got one wicket between them, so they couldn’t protect their huge score.
Steve Smith, the captain of Australia, won the toss and chose to bowl because he was worried that the dew would affect the second test. England’s captain, Jos Buttler, said he was confident in his team’s opening but admitted it would be hard to protect under the lights.
