In the session of the National Assembly chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said that the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill has been passed by the Senate with a two-thirds majority. He said that “The Charter of Democracy included the main point of the establishment of the Constitutional Court, because all over the world, special benches hear constitutional matters.”

The Law Minister said that “We want the opposition to join the joint committee and legislate with consensus.” According to him, constitutional amendments are always made with consultation and national understanding.

Azam Nazir Tarar, while explaining the immunity of the President, said that if the President returns to public office, his immunity will end. He added that “47 out of 59 amendments are being made due to the establishment of the Constitutional Court so that a balance can be maintained in the institutions.”

He said, “We saw that the appointments of some high-ranking positions had an impact on the institutions of the country, so there was a need to bring the honor of Field Marshal within constitutional limits.”

During the speech, opposition members protested loudly and chanted slogans. Despite the uproar in the House, the Law Minister completed his speech.

According to political analysts, the government’s stance shows that it wants to bring judicial reforms within the constitutional ambit, while the opposition is resisting, considering it a “redistribution of powers.”
