The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has presented public relief, protection of government land and institutional reforms as significant achievements in its latest half-yearly performance report. According to the report, the agency has focused on measures that are directly related to public interest and protection of government resources, in addition to financial recovery.
According to NAB data, Rs 2,452 billion was recovered in the second quarter of 2026, taking the total recovery during the first six months of the current year to Rs 5,414 billion. The report also stated that the agency’s total direct and indirect recoveries during the period March 2023 to June 2026 were recorded at Rs 16.94 trillion.
Recovery of government land was a key part of the report. According to NAB, 1,078,283 acres of government land were recovered from illegal encroachments and disputed allotments during operations in various provinces and the federal capital. The agency says that the aim of these operations was to protect government assets and restore state properties.
The report states that along with accountability operations, special attention was also paid to providing redress to the victims. More than 24,365 people affected by housing projects and financial frauds have been returned with money and properties worth Rs 42.303 billion. According to NAB, providing relief to the victims is an important part of the accountability process.
Regarding institutional reforms, NAB said that to modernise the investigation process, the digital e-office system, artificial intelligence-based data analytics and the Pakistan Anti-Corruption Academy have been further activated so that investigations, evidence analysis and training of officers can be aligned with international standards.
According to experts, the report published by NAB presents an official assessment of the institution’s performance and reform measures. They say that the ultimate measure of the success of the accountability process will not only be the recovery figures but also factors such as transparent investigations, judicial outcomes, timely relief to victims and effective protection of government resources. These elements will determine the overall effectiveness of the accountability system in the future.
