Iran has released new details regarding the expected memorandum of understanding with the United States, saying that progress between the parties is continuing rapidly and the signing ceremony is likely to be held in Geneva this week.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai told a press conference that the progress made yesterday has entered an important phase in the negotiation process, but the agreement will not be tantamount to ignoring past events and recent war losses.

He said that the Iranian people and leadership faced difficult circumstances and the losses suffered by the country cannot be forgotten. According to him, future relations will be based on practical steps and the restoration of mutual trust.

Baqaei revealed that the proposed memorandum of understanding does not only include bilateral issues between Iran and the United States, but also some important security and political points in the region are under consideration. He specifically mentioned Lebanon’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the end of the ongoing tensions there.

According to the spokesman, Iran is of the opinion that tensions in the region should end on all fronts and a clear legal framework must be created to protect Lebanon’s sovereignty.

He said that Iran should be given the right to export oil and petrochemical products to global markets, while the United States must implement its promises, including the return of Iran’s frozen assets.

According to Ismail Baqaei, joint measures with Oman and other regional countries to ensure maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz are also under consideration. He said that the arrangements agreed upon in this regard will be for a specific period and will depend on the fulfillment of the obligations set forth by the United States.

He further said that the modalities of signing the MoU could be finalized today or tomorrow, after which a formal announcement would be made. According to him, further details of the diplomatic, political and economic aspects of the agreement would also be made public soon.
