To control air pollution, the Lahore Traffic Police has decided to further tighten its crackdown on vehicles emitting smoke and causing environmental pollution. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi has said that the driving licences of violators will be suspended, while route permits of commercial vehicles may also be cancelled.
According to the CTO Lahore, indiscriminate crackdowns are being carried out against buses, trucks, commercial vehicles and other vehicles emitting smoke in the city. He said that the aim of these measures is to reduce air pollution and provide a better environment for the citizens.
He said that the entry of tractor trolleys and dumpers carrying soil, sand and construction materials without tarpaulin remains prohibited in Lahore. So far, 1,013 cases have been registered against those violating this law.
Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi said that special surveillance is being carried out on 12 entry and exit routes of the city. In addition, 45 special teams are inspecting vehicles at various locations and taking legal action against polluting vehicles.
He said that action was taken against 3,649 vehicles emitting smoke this month. In addition, 2,183 such vehicles were also brought under the purview of the law that were causing pollution, while legal action was also taken against 6,820 vehicles without fitness certificates or dilapidated conditions.
According to the CTO Lahore, tractor trolleys will not be allowed to operate without tarpaulin, water sprinklers and other safety arrangements. He said that an artificial intelligence-based system is also being used, with the help of which vehicles emitting smoke are being identified and challaned automatically.
Traffic police say that the scope of operations will be further expanded in the future to reduce air pollution, effectively implement traffic rules and protect the health of citizens.
