The latest statements by Iran, Oman and the US regarding the Strait of Hormuz have once again made the political and maritime situation in the region the centre of global attention. Iran has confirmed progress in talks with Oman on a new shipping route, while the US has reiterated its stance on the restoration of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing diplomatic relations with Iran.

According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghai, talks with Oman on the establishment of a temporary safe sea passage are moving in a positive direction. He said that the proposed plan would provide separate routes for the arrival and departure of ships to make maritime transport more secure and organised. However, he also stressed that if tensions persist in the region, a bilateral agreement alone will not be able to fully normalise the situation.

On the other hand, Iran’s senior adviser, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, made it clear that Tehran stands by its security stance regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He said that Iran will not accept any arrangement that goes against its national interests. He claimed that several ships have changed their routes after Iran’s warning and military activities in the region are being monitored continuously.

Mohsen Rezaei also claimed regarding Ukraine that Iran had prepared to take action on some targets; however, this decision was not implemented after Ukraine called the attack on the Iranian ship a mistake. He said that Tehran is reviewing this explanation; however, it will make its own decision regarding the future.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, while talking to reporters at the White House, said that according to him, the Strait of Hormuz will soon be fully opened. He said that after this, negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear programme will be moved forward, and the US position remains that Iran will not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.

The US President added that diplomatic contacts with Iran are ongoing and negotiations are being continued at the request of various countries in the region. According to him, the US prefers a diplomatic solution; however, Iran must decide soon regarding the agreement.

According to experts, the Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important sea passages in the world, through which a large amount of global oil passes. For this reason, any diplomatic or military developments in the region could have a direct impact not only on the Middle East but also on global energy markets, oil prices, and international trade.

While Iran, the United States, and other relevant parties remain committed to their respective positions, ongoing diplomatic contacts indicate that various options are being considered to reduce tensions and secure maritime traffic. Developments in the coming days could prove crucial for regional security and global trade.
