New shock for electricity consumers

Electricity consumers will have to pay extra in their bills for the next few months, as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a quarterly adjustment.

According to the new decision, the price of electricity has been increased by 52 paisa per unit. The total financial impact of this increase is Rs 12.67 billion, which will be collected from different consumers in phases.

According to the Nepra notification, the additional amount will be included in the bills for three months. Consumers will have to pay an additional 52 paisa per unit for electricity consumed during September, October and November.

The recent decision will apply to electricity consumers across the country. K-Electric consumers will also not be exempted from this increase. Thus, this decision will affect the future bills of consumers using electricity in different parts of the country.

The aim of the quarterly adjustment in electricity tariffs is to incorporate changes in electricity generation and other related costs into the tariffs. However, the immediate impact of such decisions for consumers is in the form of monthly electricity bills.

NEPRA had earlier completed the process of the second quarterly adjustment. After the approval of the federal government, the regulatory authority issued a notification to implement the decision.

After the new increase, consumers will have to pay an additional amount on each unit of electricity for three consecutive months. The actual financial impact on a consumer’s bill will vary according to their monthly electricity consumption.

Following the decision issued by the authorities, another adjustment has been added to the electricity bills of consumers for the coming months, while overall, this move is expected to generate an additional collection of Rs 12.67 billion for the power sector.
