Pakistan and China Celebrate 75 Years of Strategic Partnership

In a high-profile ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Pakistan’s top leadership reaffirmed that its “ironclad friendship” with China remains the absolute cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy.

Both President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted a visiting Chinese delegation led by Cai Dafeng, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, signallingsignalling a collaborative push into the next phase of bilateral relations.

A “Unique” Global Partnership

Addressing the gathering in the federal capital, President Zardari emphasisedemphasised that the deep-rooted ties between Islamabad and Beijing enjoy complete consensus across Pakistan’s public, political, and institutional spectrums.

“Pakistan and China have supported each other in every difficult time and protected each other’s core national interests,” President Zardari stated. “This trust makes the relations between the two countries unique on the global stage.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed these sentiments, labellinglabelling the bond an “unparalleled partnership in history”. He reminded the audience of the historical weight behind the celebration: Pakistan was among the very first nations to recognise the People’s Republic of China and the first Muslim country to officially establish diplomatic ties with Beijing in 1951.

The Prime Minister also utilised the platform to reiterate Pakistan’s unconditional and absolute support for the “One China Policy”, promising that Islamabad’s diplomatic stance would remain unwavering now and in the future.

Enter CPEC 2.0: The Next Phase of Growth

A major focal point of the anniversary was the transition of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from foundational infrastructure into a modernised ecosystem, dubbed CPEC 2.0.

While the first phase of CPEC successfully breathed life into Pakistan’s energy grids and transportation networks, CPEC 2.0 shifts focus toward industrialisation, green energy, and digital technology.

Pointing to regional stability, Cai Dafeng voiced China’s explicit support for Pakistan’s ongoing anti-terrorism initiatives, while expressing a firm expectation that effective, stringent measures will continue to protect Chinese citizens and project sites.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directly answered this call, stating that the security of Chinese personnel is the government’s absolute highest priority. He clarified that state machinery would leave no stone unturned to ensure airtight safety frameworks around all operational projects.
