Pakistan and the European Union are seeking closer cooperation on migration management, with discussions covering irregular migration, migrant smuggling and opportunities for legal travel.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner during the official’s visit to Pakistan. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral engagement and addressing the risks associated with irregular migration.
Pakistan has emphasised the importance of expanding lawful migration opportunities for skilled workers and professionals. Such routes could provide people with safer options while helping employers in destination countries address labour needs.
Migrant smuggling remains a serious concern because people can face exploitation, financial loss and dangerous journeys. Enforcement measures may help disrupt criminal networks, but long-term progress also depends on public awareness and accessible legal pathways.
Cooperation between Pakistan and the EU could support information sharing, border management and action against trafficking and smuggling networks.
The outcome will depend on the practical arrangements adopted by both sides and the opportunities made available to eligible applicants.
