Sources in the Ministry of Energy have revealed that a significant portion of petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan consist of taxes, which is putting an additional financial burden on consumers. According to the available details, the price of one liter of petrol includes taxes worth Rs 129.72, which constitutes about 32 percent of the total price.
According to the sources, the taxes imposed on petrol include Rs 23.72 as customs duty, Rs 103.50 as petroleum levy and Rs 2.50 as climate support levy. Similarly, taxes also account for a significant portion of the price of diesel per liter, totaling Rs 82.81, which is about 21 percent of the total price.
The taxes imposed on diesel include Rs 51.62 customs duty, Rs 28.69 levy and Rs 2.50 climate support levy. According to experts, these taxes are an important source of government revenue, but they also affect the prices of transport, agriculture and essential commodities.
Economists say that along with oil prices in the global market, local tax policies also directly affect consumers, and any change in them can affect the inflation rate.
