The ongoing political differences between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the federal government over the issue of electoral transparency have once again come to the fore. On Wednesday, the PTI rejected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s statement in the National Assembly demanding an independent and transparent audit of both the 2018 and 2024 general elections to remove doubts and doubts about the electoral process.

The issue came to the fore when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in the National Assembly session that if the government formed as a result of the 2018 elections is considered legitimate, then the legitimacy of the current government cannot be questioned. His statement came in response to Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s terming the government “illegal”.

PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram, in his response, said that his party believes that the best way to end all disputes regarding elections is through transparent investigations. He said that if all parties agree to an independent investigation, the tension in the political environment can be reduced.

PTI is of the view that there are several questions about the results of the 2024 elections which should be answered through a transparent investigation. According to party leaders, to restore public trust, it is necessary to conduct an impartial review of every stage of the electoral process.

Sheikh Waqas Akram also said that after the 2018 elections, the then government had offered an investigation in some constituencies, so the current government should also show willingness to conduct a similar investigation. According to him, this process can further strengthen the credibility of the electoral system.

PTI also referred to the reports coming out regarding the Benazir Income Support Program in its press conference. The party demanded that if the allegations of financial irregularities are true, they should be thoroughly investigated and legal action taken against those responsible.

Political observers say that BISP is an important social security programme of Pakistan, and a transparent investigation into any allegations related to it is necessary to maintain public trust. The government has not yet responded to these allegations in detail.

PTI also expressed reservations over the current situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and stressed that all political disputes should be resolved through dialogue. The party maintains that political dialogue and democratic mechanisms are the only effective way to resolve public issues.

In addition, PTI has announced continuing legal action regarding the cases of Imran Khan and other party leaders. Party leaders say that they will pursue all matters under constitutional and legal procedures.

According to analysts, the issues of electoral transparency, political stability and accountability are important in Pakistani politics. Differences between the government and the opposition have their place; however, there is also a view in political circles that dialogue and institutional mechanisms can prove to be the most effective way to resolve issues. Political debate on these topics is likely to intensify in the coming days.
