A major diplomatic breakthrough has been made between the United States and Iran in reducing tensions and building lasting peace in the region. US media outlets have released details of a possible memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two countries, according to which Washington and Tehran are very close to an interim agreement to end the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

According to reports, under this proposed agreement, Iran will completely open the Strait of Hormuz to international commercial ships, while naval mines laid in the waters of the Gulf will also be removed. This step is being considered very important for global trade, especially oil shipments, as the Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important commercial shipping lanes in the world.

US media claim that in exchange for this important development by Iran, the US will significantly ease the economic blockade of Iranian ports, which will give Tehran more freedom to sell crude oil on the world market. Observers say that if these diplomatic efforts take shape, they will provide temporary relief to the severely stressed Iranian economy, while the global energy market is also expected to stabilise.

A senior US official said that all these measures will be implemented during the proposed 60-day ceasefire extension. During this two-month period, the two countries will continue detailed discussions on more sensitive issues, with Iran’s nuclear programme at the forefront.

According to the draft, the memorandum of understanding is likely to include a written assurance from Iran that it will never seek to obtain nuclear weapons. In addition, a temporary suspension of the uranium enrichment programme and discussions on how to limit the stockpile of highly enriched uranium could also be part of the deal.

Diplomatic sources said the United States would maintain its recently deployed additional military presence in the region but would consider withdrawing those troops if a final and permanent agreement is reached. The proposed document also includes references to reducing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah and a possible ceasefire. Sources close to the White House said the US administration hopes that the remaining differences will be resolved in the next few hours, after which a formal announcement is expected on Sunday. However, Iran has not yet officially confirmed these details.
