US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary suspension of a key maritime initiative, signalling renewed momentum in diplomatic efforts with Iran following recent military tensions in the region.

In a statement shared on his social media platform, Trump said the decision came after requests from several countries, including Pakistan, and what he described as “successful outcomes” of recent military operations involving Iran.

The US president claimed that negotiations with Iranian representatives have made “significant progress” toward a comprehensive and final agreement. He expressed optimism that ongoing diplomatic engagement could lead to improved regional conditions in the coming days.

Despite this development, Trump clarified that the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place. However, the US has decided to temporarily suspend “Project Freedom”, an initiative aimed at ensuring secure maritime transit in the region, to allow space for negotiations to reach a conclusive stage.

Analysts view the move as a calculated step toward de-escalation in a region that has witnessed heightened tensions in recent weeks. Defence experts suggest that easing military posturing, even partially, could create a more conducive environment for diplomacy.

Economic observers also note that the decision could have far-reaching implications for global markets. Stability in the Strait of Hormuz — a critical artery for global oil supply — may help ease concerns over disruptions in energy shipments and contribute to stabilising oil prices.

With diplomatic channels now appearing more active, the coming days are expected to be crucial in determining whether the US and Iran can reach a lasting agreement or if tensions will resurface.
