Travel Costs Soar: NHA Notifies Major Increase in Motorway and Highway Toll Taxes

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has issued a formal notification regarding a significant upward revision in toll tax rates across Pakistan’s extensive motorway and national highway network. The new rates, which come into effect on April 5, 2026, are expected to impact millions of commuters and the country’s logistics sector.

According to the official notification, the minimum toll for motor cars on national highways has been set at Rs 100. Travellers using the Kohat Tunnel will now face a revised charge of Rs 250 per car. The decision comes at a time when inflationary pressures are already high, and the move is being seen as an additional burden on citizens planning to travel during the upcoming holiday season.

The NHA justified the hike by citing the rising costs of infrastructure maintenance, repair, and the expansion of the road network. “To maintain international standards of safety and road quality, a revision of the toll structure was essential,” a spokesperson stated. The increase applies to all major routes, including the M-1, M-3, M-4, M-5, M-14, and E-35.
