Online fraud has started increasing in Pakistan; citizens have been warned

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has warned citizens that fraudsters often obtain biometric information from people by luring them with free SIM cards or fake financial assistance. SIMs registered in such fraudulent ways are later used in serious crimes like financial fraud and identity theft.

PTA says that giving a SIM registered in your name to someone else is a legal offence. The public should not share personal information with unverified people or platforms.

In this regard, Meta has launched an awareness campaign, Is This Legit? in collaboration with PTA and educational platform EYEYAH!, which aims to make Pakistani users aware of common online fraud tactics.

The campaign is part of Meta’s Asia Pacific programme, which aims to promote digital safety and online literacy in more than 15 countries. According to Dania Mukhtar, Meta’s Head of Public Policy for Pakistan, Meta continues to crack down on fraudulent accounts, but thugs are always adopting new methods, which is why public awareness is essential.
