Lahore Traffic Police, in a further step in its campaign against vehicles failing to pay e-challans, seized a commercial pickup truck from the Green Town area, which had outstanding fines of Rs 60,000. Officials said that digital surveillance and the e-challan system are being further activated to ensure effective implementation of traffic rules across the city.
According to the traffic police, the operation was carried out during a routine check, where the vehicle’s record was checked through the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system. The record revealed that the owner of the vehicle had not submitted several e-challans despite the stipulated period.
Traffic Inspector Zaheer Abbas said that the commercial pickup truck had violated traffic signals on four different occasions. A fine of Rs 15,000 was imposed for each violation, resulting in a total of Rs 60,000 in outstanding e-challans on the vehicle.
He said that despite repeated notices and the passage of the prescribed period, the vehicle has been transferred to the relevant police station for legal action due to non-payment of fines. Further action will be taken as per the existing traffic laws and regulations.
Lahore Traffic Police says that ANPR cameras installed in the city are monitoring more than 20 types of traffic violations. These include running red signals, violating lane discipline, using prohibited routes and other traffic irregularities. After verification of the violation, the fine is issued to the registered owner of the vehicle through an automated system.
According to the authorities, efforts are being made to make the implementation of traffic laws more effective through the use of modern technology so that discipline on the roads can be improved and the accident rate can be reduced. The police are of the opinion that the e-challan system is not only for collecting fines but also an important tool for promoting responsible driving and improving traffic management.
Citizens say that the automated e-challan system can help in uniform enforcement of traffic laws, but along with this, citizens should also be provided with timely notification of fines, easy means of payment and effective redressal of complaints so that trust in the system is further strengthened.
Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi appealed to citizens to fully comply with traffic rules while travelling, take care of speed limits, traffic signals and lane discipline and pay the issued e-challans within the stipulated time. He said that timely payment not only helps in avoiding legal action but also saves citizens from unnecessary problems.
According to the traffic police, actions against defaulting vehicles will continue in the future, while the use of cameras equipped with modern technology is also being expanded on various highways and important places to make the digital surveillance system more effective.
