The government has slightly increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel for August 21, 2026. The new prices will be effective for one day only on Friday.
The price of petrol has increased by 27 paise per litre. After this, the new price has been fixed at Rs 337.78 per litre. High-speed diesel has become more expensive by Rs 1.64 paise. Its new price has become Rs 364.70 per litre.
This increase has come at a time when the government had made a significant change in fuel prices a day earlier. For August 20, petrol was made more expensive by Rs 2.97 paise, while diesel was made cheaper by Rs 32.63 paise.
After the latest decision, the price of diesel has increased again compared to the day before. However, this increase is much less than the decrease of more than Rs 32 the previous day.
The government has recently changed the method of determining petroleum prices. Under the new system, prices are reviewed daily. The aim is to incorporate changes in the global market into local prices relatively quickly.
The new policy takes into account global oil prices, import costs and other relevant factors. The daily review system has assumed greater importance during unusual fluctuations in the global market.
According to the latest data, the price of petrol has increased from Rs 337.51 to Rs 337.78 per litre. Similarly, diesel has increased from Rs 363.60 to Rs 364.70 per litre.

The impact of the change in fuel prices is not limited to motorists. The cost of freight and public transport may increase due to the increase in diesel prices. This may also affect the cost of delivery of certain goods.
On the other hand, a small change in petrol has a direct impact on the daily travel budget of citizens. However, the recent increase of 27 paise is overall limited.
The government’s daily price revision system has made it more important for consumers to keep an eye on the price trend. If the global oil market stabilises, it could also impact local prices.
