State Bank announces to maintain interest rate at 11.5 percent

The State Bank of Pakistan has decided to maintain the policy rate at 11.5 percent after reviewing inflationary pressures in the country and global economic conditions.

This decision by the central bank will not lead to an immediate reduction or increase in interest rates. No immediate change in financing costs is expected for the business sector and individuals borrowing from banks.

Inflationary pressures are still a significant part of the economic scenario in Pakistan. The annual inflation rate in August was 11.5 percent. Food and energy prices are among the significant factors influencing this trend.

While the State Bank faces the challenge of keeping inflation under control, it is also necessary to prevent further impact on economic activity. That is why the current policy stance has been preferred over an immediate change in interest rates.

There are some positive signs in the economic situation. The country’s foreign exchange reserves have improved while the current account position has also become relatively stable. The issuance of a $3 billion Eurobond has also created some room for Pakistan on the external financing front.

The market was also expecting the policy rate to remain unchanged. Positive real interest rates and an improvement in the external sector are being considered as factors that supported the central bank’s decision.

However, food and fuel prices will remain important in the coming days. Fluctuations in the global oil market can affect Pakistan’s import costs and local prices. The value of the rupee, external payments and overall economic activity will also be important for the next phase of the policy.

The current decision makes it clear that the State Bank wants to further review the economic data rather than make a major change in policy immediately. If inflationary pressures subside and the external sector continues to improve, the policy direction can be reconsidered in the future.

The decision to maintain the interest rate at 11.5% is currently being seen as a cautious attempt to strike a balance between inflation, economic growth and financial stability.
