Petrol Relief Scheme, Registration SMS to be made free

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the SMS required for registration under the Petrol Relief Scheme to be free. According to the government, the aim of this move is to make the process of getting a subsidy easier for citizens.

A meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister to review the progress of the Fuel Subsidy Scheme, in which matters related to the preparation of the programme, registration and public awareness were considered.

According to the government plan, owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles up to 800 cc will be given financial relief on petrol. The scheme will be launched in different parts of the country in phases.

The fuel subsidy scheme is expected to start in Islamabad from the intervening night of September 14 and 15. Citizens in Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and other parts of the country will start getting relief from the intervening night of September 16 and 17.

The Prime Minister directed the concerned administration to provide information about the registration procedure and eligibility to the citizens after the scheme is launched. He also directed the administrative officers, including the Chief Commissioner and IG Islamabad, to be present in the field.

Shahbaz Sharif also stressed mobilising public representatives and volunteers regarding the programme. According to him, volunteers present at the local level can help the citizens complete the registration and understand the necessary steps.

The meeting was also directed to conduct a wide awareness campaign to publicise the scheme. The Prime Minister said that government institutions should use all means, including print, TV, digital platforms and social media.

The government’s aim is that petrol relief should reach those citizens who meet the prescribed criteria. For this, timely information and easy registration have been declared important.

The directive to abolish SMS fees is also being considered as a link in this chain. According to the government, this will reduce the cost of registration in the scheme for low-income citizens and make the application process more accessible.
