From Haramain Sharif to Kashmir, PM Shahbaz Sharif’s important speech at the United Nations

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while presenting Pakistan’s position at the United Nations General Assembly, highlighted regional peace, Kashmir, water and the security of important global trade routes.

Addressing the 81st General Assembly session, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan supports diplomacy and negotiations to reduce tensions in the region. He also stressed the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab open for global trade.

According to Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan played its role in bringing the US and Iran to the negotiating table. He said that in a war situation, pressure increases on important sea routes, the effects of which are not limited to the countries concerned alone.

The Prime Minister described the sanctity and security of the Haramain Sharifin as extremely important for Pakistan. He condemned the recent attacks against Saudi Arabia and said that cooperation between Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia is not against any country.

The dispute with India in the General Assembly was also an important part of the Prime Minister’s address. Shahbaz Sharif said that Pakistan exercised its right to self-defense under the UN Charter in response to the Indian attack.

He stressed the need to resolve the Kashmir issue to avoid another major military conflict in South Asia. The Prime Minister also reiterated the demand for a plebiscite for the Kashmiri people under the UN.

Shahbaz Sharif, while expressing Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir situation, said that diplomatic and moral support will continue for the Kashmiri people. According to him, a lasting solution to the issue is important for peace in the region.

The water issue also figured prominently in the address. Referring to the Indus Waters Treaty, the Prime Minister said that it is not only related to the two countries but also to the water resources and future of the region. He expressed Pakistan’s objection to India’s move regarding the agreement.

Shahbaz Sharif said that he is addressing the General Assembly for the fourth time and Pakistan stands by the principles of the UN Charter.

The prime minister’s address comes at a time when world leaders are discussing issues such as war, regional conflicts, peace and global cooperation at the high-level session of the 81st General Assembly. According to the UN, the general debate began on September 22 and will continue till September 26, while proceedings are also scheduled for September 28.
