Pakistan has taken over the chairmanship of the Governing Council of the Borrowers’ Platform, giving it a role in discussions on debt management and development financing.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb accepted the chairmanship on Pakistan’s behalf during the World Bank and IMF annual meetings in Bangkok on October 12.
The platform is intended to help participating countries exchange technical knowledge, discuss reforms and explore financing approaches that support development. Its stated purpose is cooperation rather than collective bargaining or emergency debt resolution.
The initiative comes as many developing economies face high debt-servicing costs and limited budgetary room for infrastructure, education and healthcare.
Pakistan’s role provides an opportunity to share its experience with economic reforms and debt management while learning from other borrowing countries.
The platform’s effectiveness will depend on whether discussions produce practical improvements in debt transparency, financial planning and access to suitable development funding. Its chairmanship does not, by itself, provide new loans or debt relief.
