Another decision against PTI leaders, a big relief for Shah Mehmood Qureshi

Another important development has come in the cases related to the violent incidents of May 9, 2023, where the Anti-Terrorism Court Lahore, while pronouncing the verdict in the Mughalpura case, acquitted senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi, while four prominent leaders of the party have been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The leaders convicted by the court include Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Umar Sarfraz Cheema, Mian Mahmood-ul-Rasheed and former Senator Ijaz Chaudhry. The case was heard by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul and the verdict was pronounced in a special court set up in Kot Lakhpat Jail.

The case was registered at the Mughalpura police station in Lahore. According to the official position, during the May 9 protests, angry protesters set fire to police vehicles and created chaos at various places. The prosecution said that the named leaders planned the protest activities and incited the workers to violence.

During the court proceedings, the prosecution recorded the statements of 37 witnesses. After reviewing the available evidence and arguments, the court decided to acquit some of the accused while convicting others.

According to the verdict, apart from Shah Mehmood Qureshi, 11 other activists were also acquitted. However, several other activists have also been sentenced to 10 years in prison. A total of 22 people were named in the case, while two accused have been declared absconders.

The events of May 9, 2023 are considered one of the most important events in Pakistan’s recent political history. The protests began when former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested from the premises of the Islamabad High Court. After the arrest, protests took place in different cities of the country, in which several government buildings, police installations and military sites were damaged.

Following these incidents, a large number of cases were registered across the country and thousands of people were detained. Over the past few months, various courts have delivered several verdicts in these cases.

According to legal experts, the recent verdict is another important part of the judicial proceedings of the May 9 cases. The convicted leaders have the right to appeal the verdict and are likely to approach higher courts.

Political circles are viewing the verdict from different angles, while the next stages of the court proceedings are also being closely monitored. With appeals and decisions in more cases in the coming days, the May 9 cases could once again become the center of the country’s political and legal debate.
