PTA Urges Vigilance Against Financial Scams; Warns Against Unverified Biometric Verification

Amidst a spike in cyber-attacks targeting mobile users, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released a new set of guidelines aimed at protecting citizens from financial loss and identity theft.

The telecommunication regulator stated that fraudsters are increasingly using sophisticated tactics to gain access to personal accounts by posing as legitimate service providers. The PTA has advised the public to adopt a “Zero Trust” policy regarding unknown calls and messages.

“Do not click on suspicious links and ensure that no unauthorized SIM is registered against your CNIC. It is essential to block all extra or unused SIM cards immediately.” — PTA Advisory

Safe Practices Recommended by PTA:
Verification: Only buy SIM cards from registered franchises.

Data Privacy: Never share biometric data at makeshift stalls in public squares or markets.

Reporting: Use the PTA’s official CMS App to report fraudulent activity.

This warning follows a previous directive where the PTA made calls to toll-free numbers free of charge for mobile users, aimed at facilitating easier communication with emergency and customer services.
