Details of taxes levied on petrol and diesel revealed

A document from the Petroleum Division has revealed that a large part of the prices of petrol and diesel in the country consists of taxes.

According to the document, a total of Rs 94.89 paise is being collected as tax on per liter of petrol and Rs 95.35 paise on per liter of diesel. Accordingly, 36 percent of the price of petrol per liter while 35 percent of the price of diesel consists of tax only.

The report states that Rs 14.37 paise is included in the price of petrol per liter as customs duty, while Rs 78.2 paise is being taken as petroleum levy. In addition, Rs 2.50 paise is also levied as climate support levy on per liter of petrol.

Similarly, Rs 15.84 per liter of diesel is being levied as customs duty, Rs 77.1 as petroleum levy and an additional Rs 2.5 as climate support levy.

According to experts, heavy taxes on petroleum products are causing increased public hardship, while the government maintains that these taxes are essential for economic stability.
