FBR’s new sales tax system: Strict instructions on change of registration numbers on industrial connections

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has issued an important notification under which the change of sales tax registration number on industrial connections (electricity or gas) will now be under a regular system. This new system will be effective from October 22, 2025.
According to the notification, now businesses having industrial connections will have to first apply to the concerned commissioner to get their sales tax registration (STRN) or National Tax Number (NTN) changed. After submitting the application, the commissioner will examine the relevant documents and business details and, only after giving approval, will issue permission for the change to the electricity or gas company.
The FBR has directed all electricity and gas companies and related entities to fully implement the new procedure. Officials say the move is aimed at strengthening the tax net, increasing transparency and preventing fake or unregistered businesses.
