Gilgit-Baltistan Elections 2026: Alliance Politics Take Center Stage

The political wrangling over government formation has entered a new phase after the results of the recent elections in Gilgit-Baltistan were announced. Initial and unofficial results have projected the Pakistan Peoples Party as the largest party, while the Muslim League (N) is also an influential force in regional politics. In such a situation, the eyes of political and administrative circles are focused on a possible alliance between the two parties.

According to sources, initial contacts are underway between the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muslim League (N) for government formation. If the talks are successful, a political setup can emerge in Gilgit-Baltistan that resembles the model of cooperation established at the federal level. According to reports, the possibility of the post of chief minister going to the PPP and the post of governor going to the Muslim League (N) is under consideration.

Political analysts say that this is not just a matter of distribution of posts but will also determine the future development priorities and administrative direction of the region. Several projects related to infrastructure, tourism, energy, roads and employment opportunities are pending in Gilgit-Baltistan, for which political stability is considered essential.

Sources also say that the distribution of ministries in the proposed cabinet may be under the formula of 60 and 40 per cent. The aim of this formula is said to be to adjust the electoral status and political representation of the two parties in a balanced manner. According to observers, such a partnership can help maintain the balance of power within the government.

On the other hand, the meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Presidential Palace has also assumed political significance. The meeting discussed the election results of Gilgit-Baltistan, the prospects of government formation, the situation in Azad Kashmir and other national issues. The participation of important figures from the federal cabinet and the ruling alliance in the meeting indicates that the central leadership is keeping a close eye on the political situation in the region.

Several political leaders, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Murad Ali Shah, Sherry Rehman, Naveed Qamar, Saleem Mandviwala, Faisal Rathore and Raja Pervez Ashraf, attended the meeting. According to political observers, this type of consultation reflects the fact that the formation of a government in Gilgit-Baltistan is also considered important in the national political context.

Economic experts believe that a stable coalition government can be helpful in improving the investment climate in the region. Gilgit-Baltistan is of exceptional importance in terms of tourism, mineral resources and regional trade; however, political uncertainty has often affected the pace of development.

The results of the coalition talks are expected to be clear in the coming days. If the two parties agree on a common strategy, a government can be formed in Gilgit-Baltistan that can play an important role not only in political stability but also in achieving development and economic goals.
