Iran Claims Another US F-15 Shot Down Near Strategic Strait of Hormuz

DefenceThe Iranian military has announced that its air defence systems successfully targeted and brought down a United States F-15 fighter jet near the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. According to a statement from the Joint Air Defense Command, the “hostile” aircraft was intercepted over the country’s southern coastal region after reportedly entering Iranian airspace. Iranian officials stated that the jet was struck by a surface-to-air missile system after being tracked by advanced indigenous radar.

State-affiliated media outlets, including Press TV and the Fars News Agency, released a 29-second video clip purportedly showing the air defence system locking onto the fighter jet before the strike. Despite the visual claims, independent observers have not yet verified the footage or confirmed a crash site.

This reported incident marks a significant potential escalation in the ongoing hostilities between Tehran and Washington, occurring just a day after Iran claimed to have targeted an Israeli F-16 in the country’s central region.

While the Iranian military says investigations are underway to determine the fate of the pilot and the aircraft, there has been no immediate confirmation from the United States or its regional allies.

The F-15 platform is also heavily utilised by other nations in the area, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Israel, adding a layer of complexity to the unverified reports.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) has previously dismissed similar claims as “baseless”, though tensions remain at a breaking point following weeks of aerial engagements and military strikes across the Middle East.
