NEPRA decisions may increase financial burden on consumers: Energy Minister Owais Leghari

ISLAMABAD— Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has expressed serious concerns over several recent decisions of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), warning that these measures may lead to increased financial pressure on consumers.

The Energy Minister said that NEPRA’s decisions may not only affect the federal subsidy policy but also the uniform tariff system, which is likely to affect the energy reform process. According to him, the fact that NEPRA has not yet taken a final decision on the generation tariff pending since December 2024 is also a cause of concern.

He said that NEPRA’s policies related to transmission, distribution, and supply will be reviewed to ensure financial stability in the energy sector. Owais Leghari clarified that delayed decisions not only affect the confidence of private investment but also have direct financial implications in the form of price hikes for common consumers.
