The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved an increase in electricity prices by 34 paisa per unit under the monthly fuel price adjustment. This increase has been calculated based on the fuel cost of May 2026 and will be applied in the electricity bills of July 2026, due to which millions of consumers across the country will have to pay extra.
According to the decision issued by Nepra, this increase will be applicable to consumers of all discos, including the federal capital, while consumers of the electricity supply company in Karachi will also not be exempted from this decision. This means that citizens will have to pay a fixed additional amount per unit when the July bill is issued, although the final financial impact will vary according to the electricity consumption of each consumer.
On the other hand, according to sources, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested to increase electricity prices by 82 paisa per unit based on the increase in fuel cost of May 2026. However, after a detailed review of the public hearing, relevant financial and technical data and fuel costs, NEPRA approved only an increase of 34 paise per unit instead of fully accepting the request.
Experts associated with the energy sector say that the monthly fuel price adjustment is not part of the basic electricity tariff but is decided separately every month according to the fluctuations in the prices of fuel used to generate electricity. That is why in some months, consumers get relief while sometimes they have to pay extra.
This increase at the beginning of the new financial year has come at a time when domestic and commercial consumers are already facing financial pressure due to inflation, gas prices, rising prices of daily necessities and other utility costs. Business circles also say that even a slight increase in energy costs can affect production costs, while electricity bills have already become a major part of the budget for domestic consumers.
According to experts, the impact on electricity bills in the coming months will depend on global fuel prices, import costs, electricity generation costs and the overall energy mix. If fuel costs come down, consumers may also get relief through upcoming monthly adjustments; however, under the current decision, the increase of 34 paise per unit in July bills will definitely be implemented.
