Nepra’s action: Strict warning and fine to LESCO and K-Electric for poor performance

The ongoing problems in the transmission and distribution of electricity in the country are becoming serious, and now Nepra has taken action and imposed fines on LESCO and K-Electric.

According to the report, LESCO failed miserably in reducing losses and improving bill collection in the last financial year. The company’s losses reached 15.92 per cent, far exceeding the target, and as a result, the national exchequer had to bear a heavy financial loss. According to Nepra, notices were issued repeatedly, but the fine became inevitable due to the lack of a serious response from the company.

The action against K-Electric was taken because its black start mechanism—the main means of restoring power in critical situations—completely failed during the major breakdown in January 2023. Nepra says the management has not shown any serious progress in rectifying the technical defects.

The authority has directed that both the companies pay the fine within 15 days. At the same time, the regulator made it clear:
There is no place for mismanagement in the energy sector — efficiency is the condition!
