On Wednesday, the KSE-100 Index closed at 180,311.21 points. Although Thursday’s decline was limited, the overall breadth of the market remained weak. According to the PSX daily market report, 197 shares of companies advanced, 269 declined, while 29 remained unchanged in the ready market.

Business activity was also prominent. During the market, the volume of about 388.90 million shares was recorded in the shares related to KSE-100. The overall market also saw large-scale business activity.

The performance of different sectors was not uniform in Thursday’s session. According to market reports, there was selling pressure in some shares of commercial banks, investment companies, technology and oil and gas, while some shares related to fertilisers, leather and refineries supported the market.

The performance of stocks with large weightage was also important in the movement of KSE-100. FFC, SRVI, HBL, PPL and PSEL were among the prominent stocks supporting the index, while the weakness of ENGRO, SYS, MEBL, HMB and POL put pressure on the overall index.

Other major indices also saw a decline. The KMI-30 index closed down 356.16 points, or 0.14 percent, at 252,988.26 points. The index had touched a high of 255,124.68 points and a low of 252,730.34 points during the session.

The current market movement suggests that investors are cautious at higher levels. Despite initial buying, the index’s pullback from the day’s high indicates that some investors preferred to take profits.

However, it is premature to interpret the one-day decline as a change in the long-term direction of the market. The KSE-100 is still near the key level of 180,000 points, while the index has seen both bullish and bearish movements in recent sessions.

Local economic data, corporate financial results, interest rate expectations and the direction of global markets will remain important factors for investors in the coming trading days. Regional geopolitical developments and global energy prices may also influence the trend of the local market.

Overall, Thursday’s session was active despite a limited negative finish. The failure of the index to sustain its initial rally and the high number of shares declining in the market indicate that investors are cautious at current levels.
