According to market reports from various cities of the country, sugar prices have witnessed an unprecedented and sharp increase in the last month. According to media data, the price of sugar per kg at the retail level has increased from Rs 5 to a staggering Rs 45. According to market sources, the price of sugar in Lahore has increased from Rs 179 to Rs 200 per kg, while in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, the prices are also being sold at Rs 190 per kg, up from Rs 180-185. Similarly, sugar prices in Quaid-e-Azam (Karachi) and Quetta are touching the range of Rs 190 to Rs 200 per kg.
However, the biggest impact of this increase was felt by the residents of Faisalabad, where the biggest difference in the price of sugar was recorded, and it increased from Rs 185 to Rs 230 per kg, while in Peshawar and Multan, sugar is also being sold at Rs 195 and Rs 200 per kg, respectively.
These huge increases have badly affected the purchasing power of the common man, and this increase has come at a time when 24 other essential commodities in the country have also become expensive.
