ISLAMABAD: The PPP has submitted a comprehensive resolution in the National Assembly regarding the protection of the Sindh River and Sindh’s water rights, which has put a question mark on the possible policies of the federal and Punjab governments. The resolution clearly states that any new canal or project on the Indus River will be considered against the interests of Sindh and should be stopped immediately.
All members of the Sindh Assembly have unanimously signed the resolution, which calls for equitable distribution of water among all provinces under the Constitution of Pakistan and the Water Treaty of 1991. The resolution said that the Indus River is the lifeline for Sindh’s agriculture, economy, and environment, and the diversion of water from the upper reaches is unacceptable.
The PPP resolution calls on the House not to consider any new plan or diversion as acceptable until all the provinces agree. The resolution made it clear that Sindh was already suffering from water scarcity, and if more projects were undertaken, the impact would be devastating on Sindh’s agriculture and environment.
The House, through the resolution, called upon the federal and Punjab governments to immediately stop work on any new canal or project on the Sindh River and fully respect Sindh’s water rights so as to maintain national integration and inter-provincial harmony.
