In view of the changing nature of digital crimes in Pakistan, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has set up a special Dark Web Investigation Unit to monitor clandestine online activities and investigate complex cyber crimes. The move aims to identify online networks that can use modern technology to hide their identities and engage in illegal activities.

According to FIA officials, the unit will operate with modern digital forensic facilities at the agency’s National Command and Control Center (NC3). The investigation team will use blockchain forensics, open source intelligence (OSINT) and other advanced analytical technologies to examine suspicious cryptocurrency transactions, online identities and secret digital networks to advance the investigation based on evidence.

Officials say that the new unit will focus on crimes related to human trafficking, illegal immigration, fake travel documents, cyber fraud and other serious crimes under the jurisdiction of the FIA. In such cases, it will benefit from international cooperation along with domestic agencies as needed.

The dark web is a part of the internet where access is not possible through normal search engines, and websites can be accessed only by using special software. According to experts, although there are many legitimate uses for this platform, its secretive nature can also be used for some illegal activities, due to which law enforcement agencies around the world are developing modern investigative capabilities.

Digital security experts say that the complexity of cybercrime is constantly increasing, so modern technology, trained manpower and international cooperation will be an important part of an effective cybersecurity strategy in the future. The new unit of the FIA is also being described as an institutional step in the same direction, which aims to make investigations more effective according to the law and strengthen national digital security.
