At the end of the fiscal year 2025-26, Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has set a new record for the highest annual cargo handling in its 138-year history, which experts are calling a significant development for Pakistan’s maritime sector and regional trade. Government circles say that the port’s improved operational performance, modern administrative reforms and increased trade activities played a major role in this achievement.

According to Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, Karachi Port also surpassed the previous record of cargo handling during the fiscal year, which was set several years ago. He said that the increase in port capacity is not just a statistical achievement but also a sign of improvement in Pakistan’s maritime economy.

Cargo handling is considered an important measure of the overall performance of any port, as it includes the entire process of loading, unloading, transferring and storing import and export goods. This is why the growth in this sector is also linked to the strength of the country’s trade, industry and supply chain.

According to experts, due to the uncertainty in global shipping routes over the past few months, some international shipping companies have turned to Pakistani ports, which has also seen an increase in transshipment activities at Karachi Port. This situation has provided an opportunity to highlight the port’s capacity and management performance on a global scale.

The government says that work is underway to upgrade ports on modern lines, improve logistics networks, promote digital systems and provide a conducive environment for investment. The aim of these measures is to further strengthen Pakistan as an effective maritime trade hub in the region.

Karachi Port Trust Chairman Rear Admiral (R) Shahid Ahmed termed this success as the result of collective efforts of the entire organisation and said that the officers, employees and all the concerned agencies discharged their responsibilities in a professional manner, which significantly improved the overall performance of the port.

During the current financial year, containerised cargo handling at Karachi Port also remained at a record level, and more than 2.65 million TEUs were completed. This progress indicates that Pakistan’s ports are better able to meet the growing trade needs in the region.

During the same period, the arrival of a complete transshipment cargo ship was also recorded at Karachi Port for the first time, while a memorandum of understanding was recently signed for the establishment of a proposed maritime business district on the coastal land of Karachi Port Trust, which is expected to further promote investment and economic activities in the future.

Analysts say that if port reforms, infrastructure improvements and investment projects continue at the same pace, Karachi Port will not only play a more effective role in Pakistan’s economic development but can also become an important hub for regional trade links between South Asia and the Middle East. According to them, this success could also help promote domestic exports, employment opportunities and private investment in the future.
