Lahore: In a major step towards sustainable urban infrastructure, Pakistan’s first energy-generating smart road, named Route 47, has been inaugurated. This 4.5-kilometer corridor not only modernizes the city’s transport network. It also integrates renewable energy solutions to power the city.

Built by the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (CBD Punjab) at a cost of Rs9 billion (about US $32 million), Route 47 connects key areas including Kalma Chowk, Ferozepur Road, Gulberg Main Boulevard, Walton Road, and Lahore Ring Road. The project consists of a nearly 1 km long flyover and includes dedicated lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, which promote eco-friendly transportation options.

A special feature of Route 47 is the installation of solar panels on its sidewalks. These panels provide shade for pedestrians and are expected to generate up to 1 MW of power. Which will become part of clean energy in Lahore’s power grid. This initiative aligns with the city’s efforts to incorporate sustainable energy solutions into its infrastructure.

Imran Amin, CEO, CBD Punjab, said, “This is the central boulevard of Pakistan’s most modern commercial district. It meets international standards and includes a number of smart features. I am confident that this is Pakistan’s first smart road, which will also generate energy.

The development of Route 47 is part of a broader strategy to modernize Lahore’s infrastructure. Complementary projects include shifting underground power transmission lines on major roads like Mall Road, Jail Road, and Canal Road. The aim is to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city and reduce power outages.

These initiatives reflect Lahore’s commitment to integrate renewable energy sources and smart technologies into its urban planning. It sets an example of sustainable development in Pakistan.
