Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has started a phased project to install modern AMI smart meters in various government departments of the Punjab government on the instructions of the Ministry of Energy. According to officials, the aim of this move is to harmonize the electricity system with modern technology, make the billing process more transparent and improve the monitoring system.

A spokesperson for LESCO said that in the first phase of the project, 1,000 smart meters will be installed by August 2026. Later, 8,342 single-phase non-AMI meters installed in various institutions of the Punjab government will be replaced with modern smart meters in phases.

He said that electricity readings will be obtained automatically through the new metering technology, which will make the billing process more accurate, faster and transparent. In addition, real information on electricity consumption, safe maintenance of records and effective monitoring of the system will also be possible.

According to LESCO data, there are 1,811 non-AMI meters of Punjab government institutions in Okara circle, which is the highest among all circles. That is why the replacement of these meters has been included in the initial priorities.

The company has issued instructions to all its circles to ensure timely supply of smart meters and complete the installation process quickly so that the project can be completed within the stipulated time.

According to energy experts, the installation of AMI smart meters will promote digitalization in the electricity distribution system, improve administrative efficiency, and increase transparency by making information on electricity usage available in real time. It is also expected to help provide more effective and modern services to consumers in the future.
