The federal government has issued an order to deploy Pakistan Army in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to assist the civil administration and protect the citizens. The Interior Ministry issued a notification of this decision on October 11, 2026.
According to the order, under Article 245 of the Constitution, the military forces will assist the civil administration in maintaining law and order in the province and protecting the lives and property of the citizens. The army will also assist in the security of government buildings and other important installations.
The notification said that the deployment of the army will continue until the period of emergency imposed on October 11. The number of military forces and the resources required for the deployment will be determined by the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karim Kundi, after consulting the Military Operations Directorate of the General Headquarters (GHQ).
According to the Interior Ministry, the order will also be published in Part Two of the Gazette of Pakistan.
The decision comes after the federal government imposed a state of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The federal government has cited terrorism and law and order situation in the province as the reason for this move.
On the other hand, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has objected to federal intervention in the province. After this development, the political debate regarding the administrative affairs and security policy of the province has become more important.
The number of military forces and practical arrangements for their deployment will depend on consultations with the relevant authorities.
