The issuance of machine-readable passports (MRPs) in Pakistan has been stopped since October 23, 2026, after which e-passports are being issued for new passports from passport offices across the country and Pakistani diplomatic missions abroad.
According to the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, the date for the implementation of the e-passport system was initially set for October 15, but later it was changed to October 23.
The new policy will apply to all passport offices in Pakistan as well as Pakistani embassies and consulates abroad. Now, those applying for a new passport or renewal of an expired passport will be issued an e-passport.
The authorities have clarified that already issued machine-readable passports will not be cancelled immediately. Citizens will be able to use their existing passports until the expiry date mentioned on them, while they will have to obtain an e-passport at the time of their next renewal.
The e-passport contains an electronic chip, which stores the identity and related information of the passport holder. This technology helps in improving the authentication of travel documents and reducing the chances of forgery.
The aim of this change is to bring Pakistan’s passport system in line with modern requirements and improve the security of travel documents. Citizens are advised to check the latest guidelines and fee details with the concerned passport office before applying for a new application or renewal.
