LAHORE: South Africa have won their first ever World Test Championship (WTC) title in a historic victory. The Proteas have restored their global prestige by defeating Australia by five wickets at Lord’s.
Despite their poor performance, South Africa responded to the deadly competition with a bang.
Despite a poor start, captain Temba Bumrah led the team to victory with a partnership of over 150 and scored 66 runs himself. Aiden Markram scored a brilliant century and scored 136 runs and was declared Player of the Match
He was the main character in the successful chase run chase at Lord’s, which was the second-highest in World Cup histor
Kagiso Rabada was the key figure for the Proteas bowlers, taking nine wickets, while others also put in strong performances. This is the first time South Africa have won the WTC straight away, and their first major world trophy since 1998, bringing a moment of joy after 27 years
Over the four days of the final at Lord’s, South Africa have shed the ‘choker’ tag from their history, and emerged as a stronger team. Despite Australia’s best efforts, the Proteas’ fourth innings overcame the Australian defence and secured a five-wicket victory in the coral innings.
“This has never happened to us before, this is a special day,” said Bumrah on the occasion of the victory. Australia captain Pat Cummins also admitted: “It was tough, South Africa deservedly won”.
The victory is not only South Africa’s first WTC title, but also ends a 27-year ICC trophy drought, strengthening the team’s confidence and global status. At the same time, the success has brought new passion and determination for future Test matches.
