Islamabad: To control the increasing demand and prices of sugar in the country, the federal government has decided to expedite the import of sugar at the official level. For this purpose, the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has issued a new international tender for the purchase of 100,000 metric tonnes of sugar.  The date for participation in this tender has been set for September 8, 2025, when international companies will be able to submit their bids.
According to a government announcement, only bids of at least 25,000 tons have been declared acceptable in this tender to make the import process large-scale and effective.
It is worth mentioning that this is the second time this year that TCP has issued a tender for the import of sugar. Sources said that earlier in the tender for 200,000 tons issued on August 21, six bids were received, of which the lowest bid was accepted at $560 per metric ton. Other bids reached $592 per metric ton.
The government has already abolished all taxes and duties imposed on sugar imports in order to provide immediate relief to the public and reduce price pressure in the local market.  This move is part of a larger strategy to ensure sugar availability and control inflation.
