Tram service announced in Lahore, trial operation to begin from February 2026

Lahore: The Punjab government has announced that a modern tram service will be launched in the provincial capital Lahore from February 2026 next year. Transport Minister Bilal Akbar said that the test phase of the tram has been successfully completed. Initially, this service will be limited to Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura, and the construction and installation of the 270-seat tram will cost a total of $3 million.

The provincial minister further said that a final decision has been made to run a metro train in Faisalabad and Gujranwala as well.  According to him, tram and metro systems will not only provide better travel facilities to the citizens but will also prove to be very effective in reducing environmental pollution.

Recently, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz conducted a test run in the country’s first urban electric train “Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT)” and termed the project as a major milestone for the people of Punjab. Maryam Nawaz said that such modern projects have become the need of the hour to improve the beauty of Lahore and urban facilities. According to the spokesperson of the Punjab government, the latest SRT train has a seating capacity of 320 passengers and can travel up to 40 kilometers after being charged once. Modern facilities including air conditioners have been added to the train.

The Chief Minister expressed the expectation that after the SRT, more good news will soon come out in Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
