Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), while expressing its reservations over the lack of progress in negotiations with the government, has stressed for immediate access to Imran Khan, his medical treatment, and a joint strategy against terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The party’s statement said that the biggest disagreement during the negotiations arose over not being allowed immediate consultation with the founder, PTI. PTI asked the government why the leadership was not being given access to talk to Imran Khan on national and political issues. According to the party, consultation with him is important for moving the negotiation process forward.
The law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was also among the key points of the talks. PTI said that a policy is needed to eliminate terrorism in the province that gives importance to the concerns of the local population and ground realities. The party took the stand that lasting peace cannot be established through the use of force alone; therefore, consultations at the political and social levels are also necessary.
For this purpose, PTI has suggested that the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments prepare a joint counter-terrorism strategy within 72 hours. The party also demanded that political parties and tribal elders present in the provincial assembly be included in this process.
The issue of Imran Khan’s health was also raised in the statement. PTI stressed that he should be shifted to Shifa International Hospital and a medical board should be formed for a proper medical examination. According to the party, the government has expressed its willingness to resume meetings with Imran Khan’s family and lawyers from Tuesday. However, PTI maintains that allowing meetings does not fulfill the need for medical treatment.
The party urged the government to clarify the reasons for the differences instead of unilaterally blaming the opposition for the stalled talks. The statement said that PTI is ready for political talks, constitutional process, and national consensus, but all parties will have to show flexibility to make the talks fruitful.
PTI’s latest stance shows that issues such as access to Imran Khan, his health, and the security of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remain major obstacles to the resumption of talks.
