The government has decided to further accelerate the ongoing reform process in the power sector. The aim is to improve the power distribution system, reduce financial losses and provide more transparent facilities to consumers.

According to the Power Division, special attention is being paid to the use of technology in the reforms, improving the efficiency of distribution companies and reducing human intervention in the power system. The government says that the focus of the reforms is to provide better and reliable service to the consumer.

Changes are also being made in the electricity billing system. The Power Division has recently decided to make the detection billing process digital and automated. According to officials, this step will reduce the chances of miscalculations and unnecessary human intervention.

Along with this, the government is also focusing on the performance of power distribution companies. The privatisation process of three DISCOs is being taken forward. According to officials, the involvement of the private sector can help improve administrative efficiency and reduce power losses.

Digitalisation of the power sector is also an important part of the reform plan. There is a plan to migrate millions of metres across the country to the modern system in a phased manner. This is expected to help in better monitoring of electricity consumption, accurate billing and detection of power theft.

The government has also started work on strengthening the transmission system and increasing the capacity of electricity transmission. Efforts are being made to make battery energy storage and modern metering systems part of the future power network.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the performance of the power sector has improved as a result of financial and administrative measures in the last two years. The government has also taken steps to reduce line losses, financial deficits and circular debt.

Redressal of consumer complaints has also been included in the reform process. The government has introduced a new billing format to make electricity bills simpler and provide essential information in a clear manner. In it, the bill amount, usage and payment details are being provided to the consumers in a clearer manner.

Officials say that the ultimate goal of the reforms is to create an electricity system that is financially sustainable and provides better convenience to the consumers. However, the results of these measures will depend on implementation, institutional performance, and continuity of reforms.
