Global companies are showing increasing interest in Pakistan’s technology market. US Consul General Lahore Stetson Sanders has expressed hope that Apple may set up its office in Pakistan in the future. However, he did not call it a final decision.
Speaking at an event, Sanders highlighted the growing use of technology in Pakistan. According to him, the digital sector is creating new opportunities for students and young entrepreneurs. He also stressed the importance of technology and education cooperation between Pakistan and the US.
His statement comes at a time when the debate on the presence of global technology companies in Pakistan has intensified. In July, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Information Technology had also recommended that Apple be persuaded to establish a formal presence in Pakistan.
The committee also discussed that Apple’s iPhones and other products are already available in the Pakistani market. However, the company’s direct corporate presence in the country is a different matter. The government has also focused on the market potential for global tech brands.
The recent developments have also highlighted the local market demand for Apple products. In August, the US Consul General visited Airlink’s iSelect store in Lahore. The company briefed him on the demand for Apple products and consumer trends in Pakistan.
Apple’s potential presence in Pakistan could boost investment, employment and technical skills opportunities. It could also help local businesses connect to the global technology ecosystem.
However, market demand alone is not enough for a global company to set up an office. The business environment, import policy, tax regime, digital infrastructure and investment rules also play a significant role.
There has been no final announcement from Apple about setting up an office in Pakistan. Therefore, the US Consul General’s statement should be seen as a hopeful and possible development for now, and not as a formal decision by the company.
Pakistan has already seen a significant development in terms of Google’s local presence. In such a situation, the potential arrival of another global company like Apple could further highlight the country’s market position in the technology sector.
