Freedom of the press is an essential element of democracy: President Asif Ali Zardari

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari, in his message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, has said that today is the day in the name of these journalists. They pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the search for truth, especially those who lost their lives while reporting in war-torn areas such as Gaza and Palestine.

Referring to Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the president said that it guarantees freedom of speech and a free press, but it also has some regulations. He said media plays an important role in promoting dialogue, highlighting social, economic, and environmental issues, exposing corruption, and raising voices for the marginalized sections.

The president urged the media to maintain high journalistic standards, accuracy in news, and professionalism. He said that in an environment of fake news, misinformation, and sensationalism, the responsibility of the media has increased even more. The media should play the role of a bridge between the people and government institutions and become the voice of the voiceless.

He said freedom of the press is an essential element of democracy. Let us renew our commitment to protect and promote freedom of the press. It is hoped that the government will continue to work for freedom of the press, protection of journalists, dignity and freedom, and our media will continue to play its role in providing awareness on issues of national and global importance.
