Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during a one-day visit to Pakistan, has stressed the need for unity and regional cooperation among Muslim countries and said that lasting peace in the region can only be established through mutual trust, respect and dialogue.
During a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and a joint press conference in Islamabad, the Iranian President said that Pakistan-Iran relations are not just relations between two neighboring countries but are based on shared history, culture and religious affiliations.
He said that both countries want to further expand bilateral cooperation by taking advantage of the current positive environment. According to him, practical steps are being taken to increase cooperation in the fields of trade, economy, regional coordination and security.
President Pezeshkian stressed that regional countries must work together for peace and development in West Asia. He said that Iran is ready to promote friendship and cooperation with the countries of the region and supports a security system that is based on mutual respect and equal partnership of all countries.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, in his address, described the relations between Iran and Pakistan as exemplary and said that both countries have supported each other in every difficult time. He said that the recent diplomatic progress is a positive step for peace in the region and Pakistan will continue its constructive role in this process.
The Prime Minister said that the ongoing talks between Iran and the United States have given hope that the region will be able to avoid further tension. He also stressed the need to further strengthen economic and trade ties between the two countries.
During the visit, the Iranian President met with Asif Ali Zardari, in which bilateral relations, regional security and economic cooperation were discussed.
President Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s support for Iran’s sovereignty, stability and territorial integrity.
The Iranian President also met with Asim Munir, in which it was agreed to promote peace, reduction of tension and mutual consultation in the region.
According to political observers, President Peshkian’s visit to Pakistan is being described as an important development for further strengthening relations between the two countries, as well as promoting peace and diplomatic cooperation in the region.
