Islamabad: The Meteorological Department has issued a worrying forecast regarding Monsoon 2025, warning that this year, the central, southern, and northeastern regions of the country are expected to receive more than normal rainfall, which has created severe risks of flooding and urban flooding.
DG Meteorological Department, Meher Sahibzad Khan, told a press conference in Islamabad that the monsoon season traditionally lasts from June 15 to September 15, but this year it may start early and end late. He said that during this time, the flood risks will increase, especially in northeastern Punjab, Kashmir, and southern areas.
The DG Meteorology clarified that there are significant concerns about urban flooding in major cities of the country like Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Hyderabad. He said that snowfall was less than usual and the snow that fell melted prematurely, which has led to an increase in temperature and increased water flow.
Although rainfall will be less than usual in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and other upper areas, temperatures will remain high, which may accelerate the process of snow melting.
The DG Meteorology has issued instructions to the relevant agencies to remain on alert immediately and has also appealed to the public to take precautionary measures and follow government weather-related instructions.
