PPP Challenges Khawaja Asif Remarks While Calling for Political Engagement

The National Assembly’s Wednesday session became the centre of attention due to the detailed discussion on the ongoing political situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, the protest activities in Rawalakot and the federal government’s response. Leaders of government allies, opposition and various political parties presented their respective positions on the occasion, while most speakers stressed a political solution to the issue.

The discussion began in the context of the backlash following a recent statement by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. PPP leaders took the stance that caution is necessary while giving statements on sensitive national issues, as such matters are directly linked to public sentiments and national interests.

Former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, while speaking in the House, said that the sacrifices and feelings of the people of Azad Kashmir should be respected. He said that the political leadership should avoid such statements that could create unrest in any section or region.

Later, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, while addressing the gathering, said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is pursuing a policy of communication and understanding with political parties, but some statements can affect these efforts. He said that in the current situation, the most important need is to reduce political tension and resolve issues through dialogue.

Bilawal stressed that the concerns of the people of Azad Kashmir should be heard seriously. According to him, in any democratic society, public grievances and demands should be responded to through political and constitutional means.

During the meeting, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that he has been approached by the Joint Public Action Committee for mediation. He said that he is ready to play a role in reducing tension and taking the dialogue process forward.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman stressed that political issues should be resolved through political strategy rather than force or confrontation. He said that both the government and the protest leadership should keep the doors of dialogue open.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also made a brief statement in the House and highlighted the importance of communication among the political leadership. He said that all political forces should work together on matters of national interest.

In his address, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah said that some demands in Azad Kashmir are constitutional and legal in nature, which can only be decided through the relevant institutions. He appealed to the protest leadership to give a chance to the negotiation process.

Addressing the opposition in the meeting, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif spoke about the importance of political tolerance and democratic traditions. Referring to past political experiences, he said that political parties should work together to strengthen the democratic process despite differences.

According to analysts, this debate in the National Assembly was not limited to Azad Kashmir but also highlighted important questions related to coalition politics, government policy-making and the style of political communication. Observers say that the biggest challenge for the government and political parties in the coming days will be to find solutions that are acceptable to all parties while reducing tensions.

The discussions in parliament also showed that despite the differences between the different political parties, there is a broad consensus on the importance of political dialogue. This is why most leaders described negotiations, tolerance and political engagement as the main ways to resolve the problem.
